Rose Bay is an affluent harbour-side, eastern suburb of Sydney, located 7 kilometres east of the Sydney CBD, in the local government areas of Waverley Municipal Council (east of Old South Head Road) and Woollahra Council (on its western side towards the bay).

Famous for its views, Rose Bay has views of both the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge together.

Rose Bay was the site of Australia’s first international airport. From 1938, flying boats, including the famous Catalinas ruled the skies. On 14 September 1945, nine Catalina flying boats landed and moored at the Rose Bay wharf, repatriating Australian POWs, survivors of Japanese camps. Today a restaurant bearing the name Catalina, located over the water with spectacular views of the Sydney Harbour is a popular hotspot with local residents and celebrities alike.

Rose Bay was named after The Right Honourable George Rose who was joint Secretary to the British Treasury with Thomas Steele, after whom Steel(e) Point at Nielsen Park was named.

Rose Bay is home to two prestigious girls schools; Kambala, an Anglican, day and boarding school for girls and Kincoppal – Rose Bay, a Catholic, day and boarding school with a co-educational primary school and girls-only high school.

Rose Bay has also been the centre of Sydney’s Jewish community. It is still a strong centre for the Jewish population of Sydney, and has attracted a sizeable number of immigrants from Israel, South Africa and Russia.
